โ€œWe should have thought it was strange from the start. Why was the thief able to steal the club funds in the first place?โ€

At Presidentโ€™s words, all of us stare blankly.

โ€œUm… well? Because the door wasn’t locked?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re being naive, Kadomi-kun. Itโ€™s true that the chemistry lab wasnโ€™t locked. But even if the door was unlocked, would someone enter the chemistry lab without any purpose?โ€

…Well, no, not really.

Unless youโ€™re someone like us, who uses this place as a hangout, no one would come here that often.

I mean, most students only use this place for classes, and even then, itโ€™s not that frequent. Therefore, for most students, the chemistry lab is an unfamiliar place with no reason to enter!

โ€œWasn’t the purpose to steal something?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s naive too, Hagasaki-san. Think about it. Would you, Hagasaki-san, try to steal the wind ensembleโ€™s club funds?โ€

โ€œHuh? No, I wouldn’t.โ€

โ€œThen let me ask you differently. โ€˜Could you steal it?โ€™โ€

At Presidentโ€™s words, Hagasaki-kun hesitates. Then, reluctantly, he nods.

โ€œ…I see. โ€˜I couldnโ€™t.โ€™ Is that what you mean?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s correct. Hagasaki-san, the reason you couldnโ€™t steal the wind ensembleโ€™s funds is because you donโ€™t even know where the funds are kept, right?โ€

โ€œWell, yeah. I donโ€™t even know if they exist.โ€

Ahh, that makes sense!

If you donโ€™t know the location, you canโ€™t steal it!

โ€œI see. Indeed, theft is theoretically possible. But itโ€™s hard to steal something when you donโ€™t even know it exists.โ€

Yeah, theoretically, itโ€™s possible. You could enter the chemistry lab, open every drawer, and check all the contents until you find the chemistry clubโ€™s funds! But, thatโ€™s not something you can actually do, right? Normally, you wouldnโ€™t do it! I wouldnโ€™t want to either!

โ€œThatโ€™s the point… In other words, the โ€˜culpritโ€™ is someone who knew where the chemistry clubโ€™s funds were stored.โ€

โ€œ…So that means…โ€

โ€œCould it be an inside job?โ€

As the atmosphere grows tense, Kadomi-kun and Katori look noticeably uneasy, as if theyโ€™re troubled. Yeah, I feel troubled too.

โ€œWell, thatโ€™s the most reasonable conclusion. After all, many students probably donโ€™t even know that the chemistry club uses the shelves in the chemistry lab. But within the chemistry club, itโ€™s easy to find the funds.โ€

โ€œWait a minute. So, youโ€™re saying thereโ€™s a culprit among us?โ€

When Suzumoto asks with a serious expression, President nods without hesitation.

โ€œYes… Though, theyโ€™re probably not โ€˜hereโ€™ right now.โ€

…โ€˜Here.โ€™

Uh, what?

โ€œAnd even though we say โ€˜culpritโ€™… Well, it would be good to confirm, but I donโ€™t think we need to worry too much.โ€

Uh, um?

โ€œOh, everyoneโ€™s gathered?โ€

With a loud bang, the door opens, and in walks Itoigawa-senpai. Sheโ€™s one year ahead of us, effectively the head of the club. Well, sheโ€™s not the president, but rather the treasurer. Still, sheโ€™s the strongest. Yeah, to be honest, I might not be too fond of her. But sheโ€™s fun, and I donโ€™t dislike her. As long as Iโ€™m not the target. Hahaha.

โ€œSenpai, um…โ€

Just as Maito-san was about to say something, President stopped her with a hand gesture.

Maito-san probably intended to explain the incident, but President seemed reluctant to inform Itoigawa-senpai about it. I wonder why.

โ€œYes, we were just playing a little game. But what about you, Itoigawa-senpai? Whatโ€™s with that book?โ€

Smoothly, President lied and shifted the conversation, focusing on what Senpai was holding.

Senpai was carrying a book inside a plain white plastic bag.

โ€œOh, this? Itโ€™s a reference book. There was a sale during lunch today, targeted at second-year science students. But since itโ€™s for use next year, it doesnโ€™t fit in my locker, and itโ€™s too heavy to take home, so I thought Iโ€™d leave it here. Is that okay? Iโ€™ll just borrow some space.โ€

…A reference book sale, huh? I didnโ€™t know about that. Well, I guess as you get older, exams get closer, so that kind of thing happens. Yeah. I didnโ€™t know, though.

โ€œI donโ€™t mind. We use the space around here pretty freely ourselves.โ€

โ€œWell, thatโ€™s true… By the way, you guys arenโ€™t hiding any dirty magazines, are you? Sometimes I hear you chatting in the back of the lab about inappropriate stuff. Iโ€™m aware, you know. Oh, speaking of which, the other dayโ€”โ€

โ€œNo, we donโ€™t have any such books. We donโ€™t even use paper media.โ€

โ€œOh, really? Thatโ€™s a shame.โ€

It seemed like sparks were about to fly at all of us, but President intercepted, saving us. Yeah. That was a close one!

โ€œ…I never expected to hear that word from you, Tsuge… โ€˜use.โ€™ โ€˜Useโ€™…โ€

Ah… Yeah. Now that you mention it, that is a bit surprising.

Seeing President silently looking like he just made a slip of the tongue was pretty refreshing. Well, even President makes mistakes sometimes. Haha.

โ€œ…By the way, Senpai, may I ask you something?โ€

โ€œOh, changing the subject? I donโ€™t mind.โ€

Please do change the subject. If this keeps up, our mental strength will be drained!

โ€œ…Uh, well, how much was the reference book you bought today?โ€

โ€œ1600 yen. Why?โ€

โ€œI see. Then… were there any other seniors in the chemistry club besides Itoigawa-senpai who purchased the reference book?โ€

โ€œYes, we bought them together… Oh, now that you mention it, Kumada was fussing about forgetting his wallet… I wonder if he managed to buy it in the end?โ€

After the storm that was Senpai left, our pace was completely thrown off, but for now, at least.

โ€œThere were several seniors who purchased the reference book besides Itoigawa-senpai, and the price of the reference book was โ€˜1600 yen.โ€™ The mystery is solved.โ€

President had already regained his composure. Back to his usual self.

And the case is solved. Completely and neatly!

โ€œThe missing 2000 yen was probably โ€˜borrowedโ€™ by one of the seniors who forgot their wallet on the day they needed to buy the reference book… most likely Kumada-senpai.โ€

See? This explanation makes sense, and itโ€™s easy to accept.

It also makes sense that someone in the chemistry club knew where the club funds were if the culprit was from within.

And if the 2000 yen was missing specifically for buying the reference book, thereโ€™s a clear reason.

Considering the risk of โ€˜theftโ€™ is too high, it makes more sense to think of it as โ€˜borrowingโ€™ rather than โ€˜stealing.โ€™

Yeah, thinking about it, it was actually pretty simple.

โ€œSo, Maito-san, please wait until tomorrow to update the accounting notebook. If you just put the club funds and the notebook back in the drawer, I believe the โ€˜culpritโ€™ will return the 2000 yen.โ€

โ€œY-Yeah, right…โ€

Maito-san let out a deep sigh of relief, collapsing onto the desk.

โ€œThank goodness… I mean, itโ€™s not really good, but at least the club funds werenโ€™t completely gone…โ€

Yeah. Maito-san was really panicking, almost like she was going to faint. Itโ€™s a huge relief.

โ€œYour poor management isnโ€™t something to be thankful for, though.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re absolutely right… Honestly, it scared me to death. Iโ€™m reflecting on it.โ€

โ€œWell, if you look at the outcome, this turned out fine. It might be a good opportunity to rethink how we manage the club funds. You could consider using a small safe or putting a lock on the tin can.โ€

โ€œA lock on the tin can…?โ€

โ€œIt might be difficult to get a safe, so thatโ€™s probably the most practical solution. Having a lock would serve as a psychological deterrent as well.โ€

โ€œWait, uh… a lock on a cookie tin…?โ€

…And so, the case of the missing 2,000 yen came to an end! Allโ€™s well that ends well!

โ€œSo, should we continue from where we left off?โ€

โ€œWe were in the middle of a match, after all.โ€

And with that, everyone returned to their duel.

โ€œ…So, Hariu, did you finish your homework?โ€

โ€œ…Oh.โ€

Looks like Iโ€™ll be resuming my homework in the lab! I totally forgot! Ugh, I just want to stay in this good mood after solving the case! But homework doesnโ€™t just disappear! Ugh! If only homework could disappear instead of the 2,000 yen!

+Todayโ€™s Record+

We thought 2,000 yen was missing, but it turned out Senpai just borrowed it.

Homework didnโ€™t get done!

PS

Checked the tin can, and the 2,000 yen was safely returned. Phew!

Now Maito-san can update the accounting notebook without any worries!

PS 2

We were going to let it slide, but it looks like Itoigawa-senpai found out what happened. Apparently, Kumada-senpai confessed, and he got scolded pretty badly. Hopefully, this will make things easier to manage from now on.

PS 3

After working hard with Toriumi and Katori, we ended up with a ridiculously sturdy cookie tin. Itโ€™s like the โ€œSealed Cookie Tinโ€ now. Maito-san was pretty freaked out and said itโ€™s โ€œhard to use,โ€ but nothing beats security and style, so sheโ€™ll just have to deal with it!
