He Qingyuanโ€™s words contained a wealth of information, but now that he was in a coma, it was impossible to know the full details.

Jiang Yan didnโ€™t linger on it for long and quickly focused on He Qingyuanโ€™s first question.

โ€”โ€œFirst, asked for a way out of Cangnan Funeral Home.โ€

Jiang Yan asked Pingping, โ€œDid the latest team to Cangnan get wiped out again?โ€

Pingping replied, โ€œThe bodies were found not long ago, just as you were entering your own field.โ€

โ€œThis time, the team leader was the abbot of an ancient Daoist templeโ€”an old lady, called by many the Penglai Immortal. Sheโ€™s extremely skilledโ€”heard she even invited you to visit Penglai before she left?โ€

Jiang Yan nodded.

She remembered that old woman.

That woman had said Jiang Yan resembled an old friend and went out of her way to speak with her. From her words and bearing, she seemed genuinely fond of her. Forty years ago, He Qingfu died while handling the energy field at Penglai Island, so this โ€œold friendโ€ must have been He Qingfu.

Pingping introduced the old lady: โ€œHer innate ability is creating barriersโ€”she can block all supernatural harm and completely ignore spiritual attacks. Meaning, even if she triggered a death condition, the energy fieldโ€™s guardian spirit couldnโ€™t hurt her. Her survival rate was practically one hundred percent.โ€

โ€œSince she led the team, everyone at the bureau was so sure of success. Even when all livestream equipment failed the moment they went in, after days with no news, the bureau was still confident and kept waiting for their safe return. But just the night before last, at Cangnan Funeral Homeโ€ฆโ€

She paused here, her little face solemn.

Leaning her chin on her hand, she continued, โ€œThe psychics keeping watch nearby found all the team membersโ€™ bodies. Each one died differentlyโ€”some were strangled, some drowned, some even shot.โ€

โ€œAnd whatโ€™s scariest, the bodies appeared extremely fresh, as if only recently dead. But going by the time of death of their spirits, theyโ€™d been dead much longer.โ€

Jiang Yan frowned. โ€œโ€˜Time of death of their spirits?โ€™โ€

Pingping replied, โ€œYeah, itโ€™s this new talisman the bureau just developedโ€”pretty handy. It canโ€™t give to-the-minute accuracy, but it can tell you the number of days. According to the runeโ€™s results, all the psychics died on the first day they entered the energy field.โ€

โ€œNot a single one made it to day two.โ€

Jiang Yan understood: โ€œThe guardian spirit in Cangnan Funeral Homeโ€™s field kept all their corpses, preserving them inside, and only threw them outside after several weeks.โ€

โ€œIt was sowing confusion.โ€

โ€œExactly.โ€ Pingping pouted. โ€œBefore, this place was a 3S-level missionโ€”deadly, but still attracted stubborn hotshots. Now, itโ€™s been โ€˜upgradedโ€™ to something nobody dares touch. A place that can wipe out a whole team in a dayโ€”no one wants to go in.โ€

โ€œNo idea what theyโ€™ll do about it, honestly.โ€

Jiang Yan glanced at Pingping and suddenly smiled.

Pingping was puzzled. โ€œWhy are you smilingโ€”thatโ€™s so creepy, can you not? Seriously, stop smiling like you want to sell me off or something.โ€

Jiang Yan checked her phoneโ€™s camera for her mouthโ€™s corners. โ€œIt is a little.โ€

Pingping: โ€œGlad you know!โ€

Jiang Yan put down her phone and straightened her lips.

โ€œI think what youโ€™ve considered, the bureau has too.โ€

Pingping was confused: โ€œHuh?โ€

Jiang Yan: โ€œWith so many missing roles, stuffing them all into our team at once would be a nightmare for cohesionโ€”the bureau will have made other plans.โ€

Pingping: โ€œHuh.โ€

Jiang Yan: โ€œCangnan Funeral Home is the hardest energy field in Hua Country. Iโ€™m not even ranked in the bureau; Yu Renwan only just broke into the top hundred; the twins are still in the three or four hundreds. If the bureau throws us in recklessly, theyโ€™ll have to give the rest of the psychics a good explanation.โ€

Pingping: โ€œArenโ€™t you ranked first as a team?โ€

Jiang Yan shook her head, answering calmly, โ€œThere are hundreds of teams, and four or five others also cleared two fields in a row. Weโ€™re first because psychics like us, because they want us to get rewards. If the bureau really compared us, weโ€™d be done for.โ€

โ€œSo, to make it plausible for us to enter Cangnan, theyโ€™ll assign a powerful new teammateโ€”ideally someone weโ€™re familiar with, no need for personality adjustment.โ€

Pingping mulled this over, then nodded. โ€œMakes sense.โ€

After she spoke, Pingping waited for Jiang Yan to say more, but the silence stretched.

Half a minute later, she looked at Jiang Yan, puzzled. โ€œWhy arenโ€™t you saying anything?โ€

Jiang Yan propped her chin on her hand, casual. โ€œI hear our dear friend Pingping is ranked ninth on the charts now?โ€

Pingping: โ€œ?โ€

โ€œAnd you cleared a field in three hours?โ€

It hit her thenโ€”Pingpingโ€™s expression grew agitated. โ€œWhat are you saying, what do you want?โ€

Jiang Yan: โ€œHealer spot: Pingping.โ€

โ€œDefender: Pingping.โ€

โ€œStriker: Pingping.โ€

โ€œController: Pingping.โ€

Jiang Yan stood leisurely, every bit of her smile radiating malice. โ€œItโ€™s perfect, really.โ€

Pingping: โ€œ………โ€

Pingping: โ€œ???โ€

Jiang Yan patted her head, every curve of her smile announcing danger: โ€œThatโ€™s how the bureau will do it. Cangnan canโ€™t be left unsolved. Itโ€™s too much of a morale hitโ€”even if youโ€™re a millennia-old yao or a future director, if youโ€™re fit for the mission, in you go.โ€

Pingpingโ€™s voice was aggrieved. โ€œIโ€™m not even ten years old yet.โ€

Jiang Yan teased her, โ€œThis is your first step to becoming ruler of the world, saving all mankind.โ€

Pingping rolled her eyes. โ€œOnly if I survive. I promised Le Yi and Le Yao Iโ€™d make it to a hundred, not a day less.โ€

Jiang Yan chuckled.

It was late, so she made to leave, and Pingping zipped her backpack, ready to go visit He Qingyuan at the hospital.

โ€œBe sure to ask whatโ€™s really on his mind,โ€ Pingping reminded her. โ€œIf Iโ€™ve wronged him, Iโ€™ll apologize.โ€

Jiang Yan agreed.

The two, one big and one small, headed for the door. Mu Wang, whoโ€™d been sitting as if in meditation, patted the dust from his pants and followed. Pingping, noticing Mu Wang, glanced back.

โ€œWhy are you following us?โ€

Mu Wang quickly lowered his lashes and answered, โ€œIโ€™m not following you.โ€

Jiang Yan: โ€œHeโ€™s following me.โ€

Pingping went โ€œoooh,โ€ gave Mu Wang a once-over, and tried to catch his eye, but he was a master at evasive maneuversโ€”she never managed it.

โ€œIs he shy or what?โ€ Pingping asked Jiang Yan.

โ€œHe gets nervous easily,โ€ Jiang Yan replied.

Pingping went โ€œohhhโ€ again.

She said, โ€œSo it must be hard for him on missions. Does he never meet teammatesโ€™ eyes? Donโ€™t they shut him out?โ€

Jiang Yan: โ€œWell, they *tried* to.โ€

Pingping: โ€œOhhhh.โ€

She turned and asked Mu Wang, โ€œWhy donโ€™t you speak up? Do you talk to Jiang Yan? Why does she know you so well?โ€

Mu Wangโ€™s ears started to flush. Jiang Yan turned Pingpingโ€™s gossiping head back around. โ€œBecause we live together.โ€

Pingping drew a sharp breath.

From then until they left the bureau, she couldnโ€™t help glancing back at Mu Wang every three steps, rubbing her eyes all the way out the door, finally sighing with relief.

โ€œThe more you look, the prettier he is. Thought he looked forgettable at first.โ€

โ€œNot bad, I guess.โ€

She waved goodbye to Jiang Yan, pink backpack bouncing as she left. But Jiang Yan didnโ€™t hurry away; instead, she looked toward the red-brick building where the Yao Management Department was housed.

Beneath its eaves stood two old men. One was the lodge keeper for the bureau, He Qingguang; the other was a refined-looking stranger.

Yet somehow, this stranger felt hauntingly familiar, his presence tinged with a trembling dรฉjร  vu. Jiang Yan started toward the Yao Management Department. As she drew near, the man turned and met her eyes.

Jiang Yan didnโ€™t react, but the old man suddenly broke into a kindly smile.

โ€œYouโ€™ve grown up so much.โ€

Jiang Yan still couldnโ€™t place him, but studied him closely. The old man offered the answer himself:

โ€œI met you once in secret, back when I toured the Jiang Kingdom.โ€

Jiang Yanโ€™s eyes widened.

The elderโ€™s smile deepened at the memory. โ€œYou were so cute when you were littleโ€”shame you had to stay sealed in the underground palace. My wife was fond of you and wanted to raise you herself, but Jiang Chixi said no and even chased us out with a big broom.โ€

โ€œA thousand years, just like thatโ€ฆโ€

โ€œAh, I feel my end is near, so I came to say goodbye.โ€

After giving Jiang Yan a long look, he turned to Mu Wang.

โ€œBack then Jiang Chixi wanted me to help you, too,โ€ he told Mu Wang, smiling. โ€œShe heard my theory about turning dead wood into a corpseโ€”never thought it could actually work. How did you manage it?โ€

Mu Wang and Jiang Yan exchanged glances, but neither had any memory of the old man.

โ€œI poured corpse oil for three hundred years,โ€ Jiang Yan answered after a pause.

The old man let out a laughing sigh and asked no more, hoisting his cloth sack and walking away into the night.

Watching him go, He Qingguang murmured, โ€œThat was Bai Ze.โ€

โ€œThe physical body displayed in the Yao Management Department belonged to it. Ten thousand years of cultivation, yet as a human lived only a few decades.โ€

โ€œA soul too strong, but the human body too weak. Heโ€™ll pass away tomorrow evening.โ€
