This event takes place before the first chapter.

The perspective is that of Hariu.

It’s just a typical scene after a test.

“Ready, go!”

Snap.

…Ah, I’m glad.

“Yeah, I knew it. I knew I’d be at the bottom.”

Katori, with a shocking 8 points.

“What!? How can anyone even score 8 points!?”

Hagasaki-kun, peering over, is super surprised.

“Yeah, on the contrary, I want to ask how one can score 87 points…”

Hagasaki-kun is smart, huh? Lucky him.

…Um, right now, we’re all showing each other our English test scores.

“Hariu is…”

Suzumoto peeked at my test and had an indescribable look on his face.

Yeah. Because I scored exactly 20 this time. I totally thought I’d be the lowest.

“…Ah, I just barely beat Kadomi-kun.”

“Lost to Maito, so… my English is below average…”

Maito-san scored 57 points. Kadomi-kun got 56 points. By the way, Maito-san’s English score has been exactly average for three consecutive times. Amazing, right?

“Ah, Suzumoto, you and I got the same score.”

“Kariya also got 68 points.”

I kinda wish he’d share some of those points with me.

“What about President?”

When we saw President’s score.

“44 points.”

…Somehow ominous.

“Eh, why isn’t everyone looking at my score? Hey, why not? Hey, why?”

Toriumi is grinning, but I definitely don’t want to see.

“Because it’s definitely going to bring down my mood if I look.”

“Is that so. By the way, I got 92 points.”

Ah! That really brought down my mood! Terrible!

“If you add mine and yours together, it makes 100 points.”

Ah, Katori, Katori… Ah, somehow he’s lost all vitality…

“Okay, okay, next is Japanese. I got 90 points!”

Toriumi proudly shows off his test.

“Naive.”

To the boastful Toriumi, Hagasaki-kun shows his test.

“What, ridiculous!?”

When we saw Hagasaki-kun’s score, it was 91 points.

“Hagasaki-kun is also naive.”

Suzumoto then proudly presented his test, scoring 94 points.

…Wow.

“Ah, crap, we tied.”

Maito-san’s score, also looking frustrated, was 94 points.

Wow. Wow. Wow.

…In the end, the lowest score in Japanese was Kadomi-kun’s 62 points. It was quite a fierce battle.

I scored 68 points, so it was a close call for me…

“Next is physics. 62 points.”

Maito-san, Suzumoto, and Hagasaki-kun don’t take physics, so they’re not participating.

“I got 65 points.”

Since the average score for physics was just under 30 points, Katori’s score is pretty impressive.

“I scored 50 points…”

Oh, it seems Toriumi didn’t do as well as usual.

“As for me, I got 23 points.”

This time, I might actually be the lowest.

“Ah, no worries. I got 18 points…”

Oh, there’s Kariya below me.

“Ah, I’m relieved… I got 29 points.”

“I scored 44 points.”

So, Katori is at the top and Kariya is at the bottom.

…Huh, the scores have been quite varied, haven’t they?

“By the way, how about biology?”

“98.”

“Hagasaki-kun is amazing. I got 88.”

“Sorry for being happy with 78 points.”

Somehow, everyone’s score ended in an 8. It’s like a good omen, right? Hahaha.

…And so, we were having fun like this.

You see, even if you get a low score and feel down, laughing it off here kind of lifts your spirits, right?

That’s how I cheer myself up.

“You guys seem to be having fun. What are you doing?”

…At some point, our advisor teacher came by.

“Ah, showing each other your tests? Oh right, I heard, Hagasaki. You got a perfect score in Math 3C?”

“Where did you hear that from?”

Hagasaki-kun’s response was a bit brusque, more than usual, but that means he’s just shy, right? Hahaha.

“Math teacher Inamura caught me and wouldn’t stop talking about it.”

“Is that so?”

Ah, he’s blushing, blushing.

…When I first saw Hagasaki-kun, I thought he was the studious type, a bit prickly, and someone I wouldn’t really get along with.

But now that I understand him better, I don’t have that impression at all.

“By the way, I got a perfect score in health and physical education, teacher!”

“I also got full marks in health and PE!”

Maito-san and Toriumi got perfect scores in health and physical education.

“I see, well, how should I put it… I don’t know what to say…”

The teacher also had a mixed expression. Yeah. Because it’s health and PE, right? It’s bound to elicit a mixed reaction.

“So, how did you all do in chemistry?”

…Chemistry, huh.

…Only Hagasaki-kun and Toriumi could remain unfazed.

“Alright, everyone, announce your scores in order.”

“I got 87 points.”

“I scored 91 points!”

Yeah, these two are really smart. Lucky them.

“I got 74 points.”

“I scored 77 points.”

“I got 71 points.”

Kariya, Suzumoto, and President didn’t do too badly either.

“43 points.”

“43?! Wait, Katori, you… what have you been doing in the chemistry club?”

Katori is not the one you should be surprised about, teacher.

“…41 points…”

See, Kadomi-kun scored lower.

“And I got 38 points.”

“The heck, man!”

The teacher is dismayed and angry, but, well…

“Teacher, but Maito-san did the worst.”

…Saying that made the teacher’s face do something funny.

“Astonishing 1 point…”

…Just to clarify, in case you’re wondering, I’ll explain on behalf of Maito-san.

Maito-san didn’t notice there were two parts to question 1, (1) and (2), and skipped to question 2 after doing part (1).

So, the answer space was offset by one for everything, and, unluckily, the answer sheet was such that you wouldn’t notice the offset. I think the space for the last descriptive answer was maliciously designed.

“…What’s that, a pep talk? Be more careful next time, okay?”

“Yes…”

If it hadn’t been for the offset, it seems Maito-san would have scored in the 70s, so the teacher had no choice but to try to comfort her.

Yeah, but thanks to Maito-san, my poor score got glossed over, and I didn’t get scolded too much. Lucky me.

I feel a bit sorry for Maito-san, but the test showing session ended without issue.

“Alright. Now that the test period is over, it’s time for club activities.”

Actually, it’s been a little while since we’ve met.

Club activities were banned during the test period, so we hadn’t seen each other.

“Experiment, experiment.”

“Ah, the gas burner is missing. Teacher, where’s the gas burner? Teacher?”

“Oops, it’s evaporated.”

“We’ve done it now, haven’t we?”

“Teacher, where are you!? You were here just a moment ago, weren’t you?”

Somehow, this is fun, isn’t it?

…Yeah, until the next test, let’s enjoy this fun.

…And then.

It didn’t turn out that way!

“Okay, Hariu, recite the electrochemical series.”

“Ca, K, Na, don’t rely on me too much…”

“Write it down.”

“Ca, K, Na…”

“You’re wrong already! Potassium comes first! What have you been doing?!”

…The teacher kept forcing us to solve problems.

“Come on! You should get Hagasaki or someone to teach you!”

It’s not that I don’t understand; it’s that I can’t remember…

…And then I got scolded again…

…And now.

Quizzes have become popular within the club.

Yeah. At first, it was for those of us who did poorly in chemistry.

But then… you know, President gets into things, brought in all sorts of weird quizzes, and now it’s almost like a daily routine.

“What’s the 18th element?”

“Helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, radon.”

“What’s below cobalt?”

“Rhodium. Below that is iridium, and even further down is meitnerium.”

“What’s element 111?”

“Roentgenium!”

Yeah. For example, periodic table quizzes.

Now, we’re all about memorizing the entire periodic table with periodic table quizzes.

“What gives a blue flame reaction?”

“Gallium.”

“Copper chloride too. Copper turns blue when chlorine is involved.”

Or quizzes like this.

“Which has the highest electrical conductivity?”

“Silver. Followed by copper, then gold.”

Or quizzes like this.

“Does lead sink in mercury?”

“Um… it sinks, right? Uh, mercury is lighter, right?”

Or quizzes like this.

…But, these quizzes don’t really help much with chemistry tests…

Well, it’s fun, so it’s fine. Hahaha.

…No, later on, they did help a bit, actually.

Yeah. Can’t underestimate them.
