โBooks are categorized, arenโt they? They have three-digit numbers assigned to them.โ
Out of nowhere, Katori said this to Kariya.
โThose numbers indicate the type of book, right?โ
โOh, yes. Theyโre meticulously categorized!โ
โThen what about โReading,โ โLibrary,โ โEncyclopedia,โ and โDictionaryโ?โ
Kariya went to check and came back.
โUm, โReadingโ is 019, โLibraryโ is 010, โEncyclopediaโ is 030, and โDictionaryโ ranges from 031 to 038.โ
โI see. So, all of those fall under the โ0โ category, right?โ
Huhโฆ What is this โ0โ shelfโฆ?
Seeing my confused expression, Katori kindly elaborated. Thanks.
โOh, right. So, in a library, books are generally divided into 10 categories. The most commonly used one is โ9โ for โLiterature.โ Science-related books are categorized under โ4.โโ
โฆ I donโt use it often, but now that you mention it, Iโve seen shelves labeled โ9โ and โ4.โ
โThose broad categories are further divided, but the first digit of the three-digit number represents the main category.โ
Katori showed me a novel he took from the return shelf. The label on the spine of every book started with a โ9.โ
On the other hand, books on Japanese history started with โ2,โ and a beginnerโs guide to basketball started with โ7.โ
โAnd so, both โReadingโ and โLibrary,โ as well as โEncyclopediasโ and โDictionaries,โ are all categorized under โ0.โโ
Yeah, I got that.
So, theyโre generally all grouped in the same category, right?
โIn other words, those books are usually placed on the same shelf.โ
โThe dictionary shelf was pretty empty, wasnโt it?โ
โYeah.โ
I remember because I just saw it a moment ago.
โIf a lot of new dictionaries were added, that shelf wouldnโt be as empty anymore, right?โ
โYeah.โ
That seems obvious.
โAnd if a lot of books for the surrounding shelves were added too, the current dictionary shelf might get even more cramped. Since they all share the same main category, they might all end up on the same shelf.โ
โAh.โ
Yeah, that could happen. Even if theyโre not dictionaries, encyclopedias would definitely be placed there. And if the number of โReadingโ books increased, that shelf would fill up too. Thereโd be no reason to move dictionaries to another shelf.
โThen thereโs probably someone who would be bothered by that.โ
Katori said, pointing outside the library.
โFor now, letโs step outside.โ
โWhy did we leave the library?โ
Kariya, who is on the library committee, asked as we walked out together.
โHm? Oh, because Maito-san was there.โ
โWhat?! Were you planning to have a lewd conversation or something?!โ
โUh, how did you jump to that conclusion?โ
Because itโs Kariya, I think.
โSo, um, about what I was saying earlier. The person who would be bothered if the dictionary shelf got full is Maito-san.โ
โฆโฆ
โWhat?โ
โOh, Kadomi, you donโt get it?โ
Yeah, I donโt get it. Why would Maito be bothered if the dictionary shelf got full? Iโve never heard that Maito has a dictionary allergy or anything.
Seeing my confusion, Katori explained further.
โWell, itโs simpleโฆ I think Maito-san is using the library shelves for something other than their intended purpose.โ
A different use.
…Ah. Could it be…
“A desk?”
“Yeah, that’s what I think.”
Maito had mentioned earlier:
โWhether it’s reading a book or studying, I don’t want to use the study space desks because I don’t want to feel pressured by having to share a table.โ
…If it’s just reading, a chair is enough. But if you’re studying… you absolutely need a desk.
So, thereโs no way to study behind the dictionary shelf unless you use the shelf as a desk.
โSo, I think Maito-san has been using the library shelves as a makeshift desk.โ
โโฆM-Maito-sanโฆโ
Kariya was stunned. Yeah, maybe itโs shocking for a library committee member.
โI didnโt notice at all! Iโm on the library committee, and I didnโt notice at all! I canโt believe someone was using the shelves as a deskโฆโ
โWell, I canโt imagine Maito-san leaving a mess on the shelves or anything, so unless you catch her in the act, you probably wouldnโt know.โ
โOh! Now that you mention it, that shelf had surprisingly little dust! Even though itโs rarely used! Wow, this is frustrating; itโs really frustrating! There was circumstantial evidence, butโฆโ
โIt wouldโve been pretty tough to deduce that someone was using the shelf as a desk.โ
I don’t think anyone would normally consider the idea of using a shelf as a desk. Usually, youโd think someone cleaned it or that it just doesnโt gather much dust. And why did Maito even think of using a shelf as a desk? Thatโs just bizarre…
โโฆBut, wait.โ
Suddenly, Kariyaโs expression darkened.
โI get that Maito-san would be troubled if she lost her desk space, but why would the culprit want to get rid of her desk?โ
โฆIf you think about it normally…
โMaybe someone dislikes Maito?โ
โKadomi, thatโs harsh!โ
โWell, I guess thatโs one straightforward way of thinking about itโฆโ
Both Kariya and Katori reacted strongly to my suggestion.
โโฆUm, Kadomi.โ
Yeah?
โI think it might be the opposite.โ
โฆHuh?
โIf Maito-san couldnโt use the dictionary shelf as a desk anymore, where do you think she would go?โ
โฆYeah.
โThe chemistry lab.โ
โOh, so thatโs where youโre going with this.โ
โAh, yeah, that makes sense, considering the situationโฆโ
Yeah. I think so. Even if the library shelf is Maito’s top choice for working quietly, the chemistry lab would be her second choice, at least within the school.
โโฆUm, Kadomi. But what if you ruled out the chemistry lab?โ
Hmmโฆ
โThe computer room.โ
I think Maito once said she finds the constant hum of the computers soothing.
โโฆHmm? Oh, so thatโs your takeโฆโ
โNo, but yes, that makes sense too. If you think about it realistically, itโs true, Maito-san would probably prioritize thatโฆโ
Their reactions seemed a bit unsatisfied.
โฆWait, why?
โโฆUm. Yeah. Thatโs right. Thatโs right, Kadomi. You see.โ
After thinking it over, Katori asked me again.
โIf someone who doesnโt know that Maito-san is an unusual person were to simply assume a typical โhigh school girl who uses the library often,โ and this typical โhigh school girl who uses the library oftenโ were to use the dictionary shelf asโฆ no, wait, thatโs contradictory. Normally, a typical โhigh school girl who uses the library oftenโ wouldnโt use the dictionary shelf as a deskโฆ Ahhh, this question doesnโt make any sense anymore!โ
Hmmโฆ?
โWell, basically, I think the culprit believed that if the dictionary shelf filled up, Maito-san would start using the study space in the library.โ
I wish he had explained it that way from the start.
โโฆUm, Kadomi, do you understand what that meansโฆ?โ
What it means?
โฆโฆ
โNope.โ
โKadomi, you donโt understand a girlโs heart at all!โ
But Iโm not a girlโฆ
โWell, the other person probably isnโt a girl either.โ
Now Iโm really confused.
โYeahโฆ well, itโs just a theory. Itโs still just a hypothesis. We donโt really know anything for sure yet.โ
โBut if thereโs a chance, Iโm willing to take it! For the sake of the libraryโs peace, Iโm willing to bet on Maito-san!โ
โIs that really okayโฆ?โ
โI think itโs fine! Iโm going to talk to Maito-san right away!โ
Kariya headed back into the library. Katori and I were left behind.
โโฆWell, I guess we can just leave the rest to himโฆโ
Huh?
โI think this will solve the mystery of the strange requests in the library.โ
Huh, what? How?
โWell, Maito-san might have a bit of a tough time during the libraryโs request collection period, butโฆโ
โฆWait, what? Why?
โWell, if you think about it, it might actually be good for Maito-san too. Yeah. Weโre doing a good thing here.โ
Katori isnโt explaining anything at all.
โฆUh, could you make it a little easier to understandโฆ?
In the end, Katori didnโt explain much. His reason was, โWell, it just doesnโt feel right to speculate about someone elseโs business without solid evidence, you know?โ
But at least one thing was decided.
Until the end of the libraryโs request collection period, Maito apparently decidedโor rather, was made to decideโto occasionally use the study space desks. Kariya supposedly told her, โPlease be a sacrifice for the sake of the library!โ And Katori suggested, โIf you want to keep using the dictionary shelf as a desk, it might be better to put up with it for a while.โ
To which Maito simply replied, โI donโt get it.โ
I donโt really get it either.
โฆbut I did learn a bit about how to use the library through this incident. I realized they have some surprisingly interesting books, and I found out itโs easier to borrow books when Kariya is around, so I might start using the library more.
+Todayโs Record+
– Thereโs someone at school whoโs been making a ton of dictionary requests just to get rid of the dictionary shelf.
– Thereโs a weirdo in our club who uses a bookshelf as a desk.
– It seems the dictionary requests were to prevent Maito from using the shelf as a desk. I donโt really get it, so someone else should add more details later.
PS (Kariya)
The strange requests have stopped! Yay!
The weird requests have stopped, and the peace of the library has been preserved. I think the person who was behind the requests is happy now because they can share a table with Maito-san whenever they want. And if their efforts lead to Maito-san finding love, that would be great for everyone! Right? Good luck, request culprit! Iโve never talked to you, and I donโt even know your name!
PS 2 (Kariya)
The request collection period has ended! The library is safe!
But it seems Maito-san has gone back to using the dictionary shelf again.
The request culprit (apparently some guy named Fukuyama from Class 2) seemed disappointed, but Iโm disappointed in his lack of persistence. Try harder next time.
PS 3 (Kariya)
By the way, a cat photo book has been added to the library. Be sure to check it out!
PS 4 (Kadomi)
I think we should delete this addendum before Maito sees it.
Also, I borrowed the cat photo book. It was cute. I recommend it.
